iPhone 4S gets official: 8MP, 1080p video, faster download speeds, up to 64GB, Sprint

Over the last few weeks we’ve seen the focus of today’s Apple announcement shift from the iPhone 5 to something called the iPhone 4S. And the 4S, which sounds a like an iPhone 3GS-style speedbump is, in fact, what landed today.
So what do you need to know about Apple’s next smartphone?
As expected the iPhone 4S is powered by Apple’s A5 processor, just like the iPad 2. It’s not clear whether this is the standard version or low-powered one, as was rumored, but we’ll learn that soon enough. It’s a dual-core chip that coupled with dual-core graphics which should deliver 7x the performance of the A4 found in the iPhone 4. More good news: packing in that screamer of a chip shouldn’t kill battery life. Apple says the phone will be good for 8 hours of usage.
The Retina display is back–this was a crucial component of the iPhone 4 and by this point we can assume it’s a vital part of the iPhone DNA.
The antenna/radio system was upgraded as well. (This is big given the iPhone 4′s issues withAntennagate.) So what does the 4S bring to the table? The coolest part is an intelligent switching system that can optimize call quality by switching from one antenna to another. Past the tech the big story here is that the iPhone 4S is approaching 4G speeds without using 4G technology. It should, theoretically, be able to handle 14.4Mbps download speeds.
Also, it’s a worldphone, which means CDMA+GSM in one device. That should mean one model for the US carriers.
And those 8MP camera rumors? They were true. The iPhone 4S will step up the iPhone 4′s impressive 5MP camera by increasing the image size. It’s a backlit CMOS sensor that takes in 73% more light than the previous generation’s sensor. It’ll pack cool, real-camera features like face-detection and auto white balance. It shoots at 3264 x 2448.
And that sensor it doesn’t just mean great pictures, video is enhanced as well. The iPhone 4S can take 1080p video. Features will include real-time video stabilization and noise reduction.
That’s about it for now! The announcement has moved on to Siri, the personal assistant software built into iOS 5. We’ll see if an iPhone 5 is in the cards for later, possibly once Tim Cook gets back on stage.
The iPhone 4S will be available in both black and white. The pricing will be by storage capacity: 16GB $199; 32GB, $299; 64GB, $399.
Pre-orders will start on October 7th and the phones will ship on the 14th. The iPhone 4S will be available on Sprint (!), Verizon, and AT&T.
