Mac OS X Lion now available via USB thumb drive, but it’ll cost you twice as much

When Apple’s latest operating system, OS X Lion, was released on July 20, over 1 million people downloaded the long-awaited OS X update. Yep, one million downloads in just one day. That’s definitely something for Apple to boast about. Making Lion available in the Mac App Store was a first for Apple, since, in the past, the company has released its OS X software via physical CDs.
At $29.99 a copy, downloading it through the Mac App Store was a win for customers. It’s available immediately without having to go to an Apple Store or wait for it to be shipped to your house (it just takes as long as your internet connection allows), and you get it for less money. But if you want a physical copy of Lion you had to wait almost an entire month and pay $69  for your copy.
For those OS X users who don’t have a broadband Internet connection, downloading the massive file would be impossible unless they went to the Apple Store to use the store’s WiFi for free. Thus, some people did have to wait for their copy of Lion. However, the wait is over; as of today Apple is selling the $69 USB install drive online.
Though twice as much as downloading it via the Mac App Store, the shipping is free and you can get the drive within one to three business days. Apple does point out that when you install OS X Lion with the USB thumb drive, you won’t be able to reinstall OS X Lion from Lion Recovery. You’ll need the USB drive again to reinstall it, so make sure you keep that little bugger in a safe place.
Interestingly enough, when Apple released the last version of OS X, Snow Leopard, it was offered via a physical DVD and had a $29.99 price tag. Clearly, by making Lion more than double that price, Apple is really trying to push the Mac App Store as the ultimate way to buy software.
