No Apple iPad 3 until spring due to Retina Display problems

If you’ve been waiting to buy an iPad in hopes of a third-gen tablet being released this fall, you’ll either have to just buy an iPad 2 or continue to wait. Apparently we won’t be seeing the iPad 3 until 2012. Apple has supposedly canceled orders with its suppliers due to problems with the Retina Display.
Apple’s fall release schedule will be back to normal with new iPods and (hopefully) the iPhone 5, resulting in the typical spring release of a new iPad. Back in July we heard that Apple was testing the iPad 3 Retina Display from both LG and Samsung to see which one was more suitable for the next-gen tablet. Though it’s not confirmed by Apple, the new displays were said to have a resolution of 2048 x 1536 with over 280 pixels per inch.
The cancellation is supposedly due to yield rate issues in the production of the Retina Display. Apple has the displays being primarily supplied by Japan-based Sharp, but at a high price. The other supply partners, Samsung and LG, aren’t able to reach a sufficient yield.
Apple had reportedly placed an order of 1.5 million to 2 million units in the third quarter, and five million to six million in the fourth quarter. The high-resolution panel apparently requires a much larger backlight source, and just one edge light bar isn’t enough to reach acceptable levels. Since the iPad 3’s body is so thin, the “color support and toughness will all conflict with the panel’s technology restrictions.”
No word on the rumored A6 chip that was being manufactured by TSMC on a trial basis. The A6 would replace the A5 currently in the iPad 2, and it’s rumored that the chip would also be in the iPhone 6. Perhaps the problem with the fall release comes not just from the hardware yield, but also from the fact that Samsung helped design the A5 processer and is thought to own some intellectual property relating to it.
