AT&T’s Android market share increases as Verizon’s declines


Back in March, Chitika, a research arm that monitors and reports on Internet trends, published a study breaking down Android smartphone traffic share by mobile provider. At that point, T-Mobile held 16.7 percent, Sprint held 25.3 percent, and Verizon held 51.4 percent. But what about AT&T? The provider known for its allegiance to the iPhone only had 3.6 percent of the Android market share.
But the numbers are slowly changing in favor of AT&T. Chitika ran the same study for the numbers in August, and found that the results were quite different this time around. Verizon still has the majority of the market, but it has decreased by about 10 percent. Verizon now holds a 41.05 percent share. AT&T, on the other hand, has increased about 5 percentage points from 3.6 percent to 8.7 percent . Though that’s not a huge number, compared to Verizon, it shows that AT&T is on its way up.
AT&T’s HTC Inspire and Motorola Atrix were very popular among smartphone users. Though its numbers are down, Verizon still holds four of the top five Android smartphones, including the Droid X,HTC Droid IncredibleSamsung Fascinate, and the Droid. Is Apple taking away from Verizon’s numbers thanks to its CDMA iPhone? That smartphone makes up 10.3 percent of the total iPhone market at 2.3 million. The numbers did decrease after Verizon launched its iPhone 4 suggesting it has had an impact.
As for T-Mobile and Sprint, both companies have kept a steady ratio. However, the smaller companies like MetroPCS, Virgin, and US Cellular which had a total of less than 3 percent of the Android market back in March, n
