Dungeon Hunter 4

Dungeon Hunter 4: The latest action-packed RPG in the series

Dungeon Hunter 4

Quality graphics, content and gameplay packed into a mobile RPG

Gameloft has taken the wraps off of the fourth iteration in its Dungeon Hunter franchise, and it doesn't disappoint as a worthy successor to the first three. The franchise is a top-down hack-and-slash game, but just leaving the description at that sells it a little short. There's also an extremely expansive RPG component to the game, with character management, skills, upgradable weapons, item crafting, quests and so much more.
The depth of content available in games on mobile platforms is baffling, and the experience provided in Dungeon Hunter 4 is a great example of this. Hang with us after the break and learn more about what Dungeon Hunter 4 has to offer.
Dungeon Hunter 4
Dungeon Hunter 4 is set in a mythical land of sorcery, demons and over the top battles for entire regions of the fictional world. You start out the game with a nice cinematic introduction to give you a nice primer of the storyline, which is important for an RPG that you'll be spending lots of time in. You then select one of four classes -- Battleworn, Blademaster, Warmage or Sentinel -- as well as their gender and name. You can run multiple characters at once, going in different directions with each if you prefer. In typical RPG fashion, your character starts at level 1 with a minimal set of gear and stats.
Another nice cinematic cut scene leads you into your first level where you're instantly thrown into some action. Battling your way through some easy to defeat demons, you're given nice tutorials every time a new thing happens in the game. For example when you receive a new spell, you're guided into your character pane to enable the spell and drag it into the action bar. When you pick up a new piece of gear, you're again given steps to equip and upgrade it and sell the old item you're no longer using. Along the way you're also greeted by allies, which help lead you through the storyline with dialogue and cut scenes.
The main control scheme in Dungeon Hunter 4 is what you'd expect for this type of game. You get a single joystick on the left, along with a main attack button on the right and special ability and spell buttons around both. Across the top of the screen you have a character pane on the left showing your picture, health, mana and level, as well as a mini map on the right. Because you have no control over the camera angle in the game (with just one joystick), the map becomes extremely important to getting your bearings as you move along through levels. You get green and red dots to show allies and enemies around you, as well as indicators of loot to be picked up and waypoints for upcoming objectives. It takes a couple of levels to be completely acquainted with the controls -- and much longer to understand every function of the game -- but the hand-holding is almost necessary and we're glad it's there.
Dungeon Hunter 4
After your brief introductory period to the game, you're let off on your own to start killing the demons and protecting your allies in the search to complete your objectives. The gameplay is good -- scratch that, great -- and appropriately keeps in mind the limitations of controls on a mobile device. You are never expected to make precise attacks or individually target certain enemies, which helps keep the game moving. That's not to say that Dungeon Hunter 4 is simple, it can get quite difficult, but it is just appropriately designed keeping in mind touchscreen controls. There are still important decisions to be made about which spell to use at what time, and where to move on through the level next.
The graphics, sounds and voice acting are quite high quality for mobile devices as well, which help along the storyline and keep you feeling like you're progressing through the game. As we said, this feels like a complete RPG experience due to the depth of content available. Aside from the great single player experience, Dungeon Hunter 4 also includes multiplayer co-op and PVP both online and on local networks, right from the main menu. This gives pretty extensive replay value to the game, even if you happen to get through the single player storyline.
Dungeon Hunter 4
Being a free game with no ads, there is of course an in-app purchase situation at play here. In order to make some item purchases in the game and speed up the progress of upgrading and crafting items, gems must be used. As you progress through the game you come across gems naturally but at some point you will be faced with a situation where you would really like to have more than you do -- and this is where the store comes in. Buying bundles of 200 to 15,100 gems will set you back anywhere from $1.99 to $99.99 in-game (you get bonus gems when you purchase large amounts). Like it or not, this is the way many mobile games are going. While it may not be an issue for most playing exclusively in single player mode, it may rub some multiplayer enthusiasts the wrong way.
But there's no reason to let the in-app purchases have you down on this game in any way. Dungeon Hunter 4 provides an excellent gaming experience -- even on a phone-sized display -- that you can get hours upon hours of gameplay out of. Gameloft has made a more than worthy successor to the previous three Dungeon Hunter titles this time around, and has done it in a free-to-play model that exposes it to as many players as possible.

T-Mobile's new plans

T-Mobile's new plans: Ten frequently asked questions

T-Mobile SIM Card

T-Mobile just dropped one helluva big change on us, completely redesigning its plans and how it sells devices.

No matter how simple they are or how you explain them, there are bound to be questions left unanswered. We've been keeping an eye on the burning questions people are having regarding the changes, and done our best to answer them below. We implore you to first take a look at our full set of announcement posts from Tuesday, where we break down the gritty details of the different plans, as well as some device announcements and other details:
Still curious to know a little more about T-Mobile's new rate plans? Hang around after the break and see if we can clarify a few things.

1. Will I be required to sign a 2-year contract on T-Mobile anymore?

Nope! T-Mobile will not require a 2-year contract for its services anymore. At this moment, authorized resellers (think Best Buy and RadioShack) will still offer 2-year contract "Classic Plans," but T-Mobile's own stores and website will not even offer the option.

2. How are family plans done in the new system?

The plan system for accounts with multiple lines is nearly identical to that of individual lines. The base cost of the first line on an account is $50, which gets you unlimited talk, text and data -- the first 500 megabytes of which is at full speed. The second line is $30 additional, for the same services. Each line thereafter is $10 more, also coming with the same talk, text and 500MB of full speed data.
Each line can be given an additional 2GB of data (for 2.5GB in total) for $10 per month per line. $10 more (per month per line) after that will offer you unlimited data on each line. If you would like more data, including hotspot usage, you can add 2GB of data per month at the rate of $10 to any line.

3. Wait ... so it's unlimited, but there's a limit on tethering?

The only place where the plans really get more complicated is when it comes to unlimited data and tethering. First let's talk about the tiered prices -- for any plan other than the $70 unlimited plan, hotspot and tethering are included. So for example if you have paid $20 extra for 4.5GB of data per month, you can tether with all of it.
On the $70 unlimited plan, there is only 500MB of tethering included. Additional buckets of tethering-available data can be purchased at the same rate as any other data -- $10 per 2GB. Ya, it's annoying, but it's also the only way T-Mobile can likely offer an unthrottled unlimited plan for $70 per month. We'll hope they budge a bit more on this going forward, but the prices aren't ulcer-inducing by any means.

4. Can I add a tablet to my plan? Does it share data with my other devices?

Tablets can now be added to a plan as if they were any other device, and have their own data allotment. When adding a tablet, hotspot, laptop or data stick to an account that already has a phone on it, the initial charge will be $10 and include 500MB of high speed data. The same data tiers apply as with the phones -- $10 per 2GB, up to 12.5GB total. There is currently no unlimited data option for tablet, hotspot, laptop or data stick devices.

5. Will I have to pay full retail for my device if I move to T-Mobile now?

With a move to the new Simple Choice no-contract plans, T-Mobile is differentiating between the cost of the plan and the cost of the phone. This means that if you would like to bring your own phone, or buy one from T-Mobile at full retail price, you will pay the regular rates mentioned above. If you would prefer to have a lower up-front cost but still have a new device, you can buy a phone on an installment plan.
The installment plans consist of a "down payment" and 24 even monthly installments thereafter, with no interest. For example, a new high-end device may set you back $99 down, and 24 payments of $20 -- or $579 in total. The amount of the down payment and installments will differ based on device, but we can expect prices similar to this example. The final purchase price of the phone should be nearly identical to the price if you were to purchase it up-front.
Again the installment plan you have for your phone is not tied to your service plan, so you can pay off your phone at any time and leave, regardless of how far into your service you are.

6. Will the phones bought from T-Mobile be SIM unlocked?

Like most carriers, T-Mobile will keep its devices SIM locked to its network by default if they are purchased on an installment plan. Save for a few cases (the iPhone 5 is expected to be unlocked) you should expect each device to come out of the box locked -- to be unlocked when you finish paying off the installment plan or if you are in good standing and traveling abroad.

7. Are there separate plans or charges for LTE devices?

Nope! T-Mobile is not distinguishing between plans and prices if you have an LTE device or not. This is a good thing! (The first LTE-capable devices on T-Mobile are the HTC One, Samsung Galaxy 4 and Galaxy Note 2 and the BlackBerry Z10.)

8. If I have an LTE device, where can I expect to see the new network?

T-Mobile has officially announced that Baltimore, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Jose, Calif. and Washington, D.C. are the up and running now, with many more to come this year.

9. What additional features are included with Simple Choice plans?

  • Call Forwarding (a big one for Google Voice users)
  • Call holding, call waiting
  • Caller ID
  • Customer Care (T-Mobile is well known for their CS)
  • Voicemail
  • Directory Assistance

10. I keep hearing about 1900MHz Deployment, should I care?

In order to make room for its LTE network deployment on AWS (that's 1700/2100MHz), T-Mobile has been moving its HSPA+ service over to the 1900MHz frequency. The reason why you may have heard about it is because this move gives interoperability with current AT&T (and most international) handsets for HSPA+ service. The move to 1900MHz is an important one only if you're interested in bringing a device to T-Mobile that doesn't support AWS.
The move has already taken place in dozens of major markets, and will continue as T-Mobile rolls out more locations with LTE. If you're buying a phone from T-Mobile, or another AWS-compatible device like the Nexus 4 from Google, you don't need to worry about your market having 1900MHz HSPA+.

Now we honestly don't think that we've answered every question on your minds, but hopefully we've hit the big ones. If you have some more specific questions to ask, we'll be continuing that discussion in the forums:

Ask and answer T-Mobile plan questions in the forums!

Nexus 4 shipping with updated design

Confirmed: Nexus 4 shipping with updated design

Nexus 4 redesign

Small nubs now lift the back of the phone up off a table; camera lens gets a slight redesign

Android Central has confirmed that the Nexus 4 has undergone a little bit of a design tweak. As first reported by German site MobiFlip. there are now a couple of small nubs on the rear of the phone, where the glass meets the foot, positioned just above the two screw holes.
We've confirmed the change on a pair of Nexus 4s we ordered on Monday this week and received on Wednesday. In the image above, our original Nexus 4, now some four months old, is on top, with a new retail unit (still in its protective plastic) at the bottom. Note the little nub between the screw holes of the two phones.
This small design change has a couple of effects. It lifts phone up ever so slightly, allowing sound to escape the flush speaker. We can confirm that sounds are a little fuller and louder. Not a great deal, but we can tell. The change also should help keep the glass back from getting the little hairline scratches it's been prone to pick up.
And perhaps more important, it should keep the ultra-slick phone from sliding off any similarly slick surfaces.
Nexus 4 redesign
The little nubs are just big enough to be felt when you're holding it. You'll know if you've got them on your phone.

Nexus 4 camera housing also gets a tweak

Nexus 4 redesign
Another small change noticed regards the camera lens. There's a little less exposed area around the lens. It's unclear whether that's simply a design change, or if it helps with light leakage, or if it's just discrepancies in the manufacturing process. (We're working on tracking that down.) But it is noticeable, at least when you're looking at two phones side by side. Interesting is that in our old Nexus 4, the lens is centered in the hole -- it's definitely not in the new unit we picked up this week.
All in all, good signs that neither LG nor Google has given up on the Nexus 4 (we debunked that rumor months ago). Oh, and the new phone still has the glittery back.

Amazon tablet app

Amazon tablet app now finally available in some European countries

Android Central
For reasons not all that clear, tablet owners who wished to use the Amazon Mobile application outside of the United States have been squarely out of luck. More so, it's still disappointing that there has to be a separate tablet app at all. With this latest update to the application however, Amazon customers in Italy, France, Germany, Spain and the UK can now take advantage of shopping from their Android tablets.
The Amazon Mobile tablet app is compatible with tablets between 7 and 10-inches in size, and with screen resolutions from 1024x600 all the way up to 2560x1600. Android 4.0.3 and above is required, and you can grab a copy from the Play Store link above.

Nexus 4

Finally get your Nexus 4? We'll help get you started

LG Nexus 4
It looks like Google finally is getting a handle on its Nexus 4 supply/retail issues. Its flagship Jelly Bean phone went back on sale this week and boxes should be hitting doorsteps anytime now. For a good many of you, this will be your first time with the Nexus 4. For others, it'll be the first time with any Nexus.
So where to begin? Even if you've had an Android smartphone in the past, a Nexus is both familiar and new, full of options some other smartphones don't have, while at the same time lacking features other manufacturers pack into their own phones.
Let's take a look at some of the thing new Nexus 4 owners need to know, need to watch out for -- and need to take advantage of.

1. Where to start

If you haven't already, have a look at our Nexus 4 review, and Alex's two-month revisit. That's an excellent place to start.

2. There's a lot of glass on this thing

Nexus 4
Pro tip: Do not stand on your Nexus 4
First thing you notice out of the box. Glass on the front, glass on the back. And, yes. Glass can break. Some folks have broken their Nexus 4s. Some haven't. You might have heard stories about them shattering on carpet. Or simply by being placed onto a counter or table or something. Stranger things have happened, I suppose. I don't think there's been the sort of uproar you'd see with a true design flaw or anything. Sometimes glass breaks. Be careful.
Glass also scratches. The front's covered in Gorilla Glass 2, scratches will still happen. I've got a couple nice ones (from my dog's nails, I think) on mine. The back of the phone's not immune either. On the other hand, I don't use cases.

3. The Nexus 4 is SIM-unlocked

This is one of the major features of Nexus phones. They're "SIM-unlocked," meaning you can use any GSM SIM card in it without needing an unlocking code. And because it's set up with the proper frequencies, you can use it on T-Mobile or AT&T in the United States and get proper HSPA+ speeds.
You might still have to handle the APN settings yourself, though. Chances are if that's necessary, there will be instructions from whomever you got the SIM card from.

4. And then there's the other kind of 'unlocked'

The other great thing about a Nexus phone is that it's designed to be tinkered with. To that end, you'll need to unlock the bootloader. That's as simple as typing fastboot oem unlock in a command line with your phone plugged in. Once that's done (we've got some help here if you need it), you'll be able to flash new system images. That means it's easy to load up custom ROMs. And then there's ...

5. It's easy to gain root access on the Nexus 4

Again, it's a Nexus. Getting root access (also referred to as "rooting") is trivial -- just a matter of flashing a new image once the bootloader is unlocked. There's a great guide for rooting the Nexus 4 in our forums.
But you know what? A lot of us don't root our phones. And that's perfectly fine (and more secure), too.

6. "Stock" Android is great, but you can make it even better

We mentioned that the Nexus 4 doesn't have all the features that other manufacturers put into their phones. The idea is to ship the bare Android experience for folks to customize their own way from Google Play. Don't like the stock messaging application? Get a new (and arguably improved) one from Google Play. The same goes for things like the keyboard, the camera software, the music player, etc. Android is all about choice, and even system applications are replaceable.

7. Set up your cloud accounts

Because the Nexus 4 ships with limited storage, you'll want to get used to using the cloud. Google offers some great applications that are already tied into the account you used to set up the phone. Google Music will let you store up to 20,000 of your own songs and streams them back at 320kbps, Google Drive (formerly Google Docs) offers 5GB of free file storage in addition to powerful document editing and creation. Google+ is a great way to store pictures, and Youtube is the place to store the video you create.
There are plenty of other "cloud apps" to take advantage of as well. Netflix and apps from your cable or satellite company offer streaming video on-demand, or you can rent (and buy) movies and TV shows right in Google Play. Apps like Dropbox or SugarSync can handle all your file storage needs if the 5GB from Google Drive isn't enough, and the list of streaming music services is a long one. The cloud takes some getting used to, but it really does work.

8. Set up your Google account and services

Even if you don't plan on using Google's cloud services, setting up your online presence through Google is a good idea. You Nexus 4 comes with a full suite of applications from Google, and as soon as you logged into your Nexus 4 the first time you activated them all under your account. Google+ is a great way to socialize with your friends (you'll find all of us from AC there chatting it up) and includes a powerful group messaging application as part of the app. Other apps like Currents and Chrome sync with your Google account, and of course you have Gmail, Google contacts, and Google calendar which are some of the best apps in mobile today. Go ahead and explore these apps, and dig into the settings to get everything to your liking.

9. Set up the way your Nexus 4 sounds

Every app that can notify you makes a noise, and with Android every one of them is user-set. You'll find a handful of notification tones and ringtones available, and adding your own is easy. Collect the files you want to use (.mp3 and .ogg files are supported) and copy them right to the device. If you're using a Mac you'll need to download the file transfer utility, but Windows is supported out of the box. Just plug your Nexus 4 in and open the folder in your file explorer. Ringtones go into the folder named "Ringtones", notification sounds go into the folder named "Notifications", and alarm sounds go into the folder named "Alarms". Afterwards, your new choices will appear right in the list, ready to use. Finally, there are apps in Google Play that let you schedule the volume based on time, so your phone stays quiet during work hours or while sleeping.

10. Visit the forums

Getting a Nexus 4 puts you in a special club. You'll want to chat with other folks about your new phone, learn and share important tips and tricks, and find out about great new apps that make the Nexus 4 even better. The forums is the perfect place to make all that happen. For visiting from your phone, there's evena great application that keeps you in touch while you're away from the house. We'll see you there!

iphone data plan

Subscribing to your network data plan is an extra utility expense on your own regular expenses. When you at first applied for a data plan along with your network, you would expect much more ease and comfort in terms of communication and accessibility at any time anywhere. On the other hand, it's not at all generally recognized to most subscribers that some networks who claim to cater to your communication needs have costs that aren't clear to you. Also, it is essential that a consumer has to be well informed and knowledgeable with the system procedures that their mobile device are processing in times that they don't know of.
Take for example each time a Smart Phone refreshes its network connectivity and configures its mobile web capabilities, we don't understand that there are program processes that operate in the background which basically needs a connection and eventually do we know that charges have been placed in the course of such procedures. We are amazed to check our billing record that exhibits a whooping amount of charges. It is additionally secure that we personally configure our interconnection settings than have it instantly connect to the internet in times that will require of it.
A lot of applications in the app store can guide you and direct you towards determining your data plan charges. Such programs feature a handbook configuration of the designated free call and text message allocations on your own Apple iPhone based mostly from your regular free allocations. It exhibits a screen prompt to remind and warn you in case you have actually consumed your free call minutes and number of free SMS messages delivered. What exactly is finest about these apps is, you could configure the settings to eliminate all your outgoing communication to guarantee that you don't go beyond your per month data plan consumption. However, you can do or else, with just a warning message which will prompt on screen reminding you regarding it.
Another excellent addition for your iPhone is getting an iPhone insurance policy for it. An insurance policy specifically for your iPhone guarantees you of whole defense against damages got accidentally, whether it's through actual scratches or exposure to fluid. It also shields your Apple iPhone from unwanted deceptive phone calls that will burden you in your data plan bills in incidents of loss or theft. Your computer data plan monitoring application will be doubled with all the deceptive calls manage protection that the iPhone insurance provides you with. The application plus the insurance just right goes with your iPhone, no question.
In this way you will be quite mindful of what charges will appear on your billing statement. You're very much at ease by doing this, not having to worry about secret charges or excessive use of your data plan allocation which will take your credit limit to the maximum. Nevertheless, these apps can significantly suggest that having an Apple iPhone is a smart move and not a rather vain and luxurious one.
Love your iPhone 4 by shielding it with extensive iPhone 4 insurance. Get your Apple smart phone insured from theft, loss and unintended damages with fraudulent call insurance too. iPhone insurance, check it out today.

VoIP lets you make voice calls over the Internet to other users who have SIP accounts. Near-field communication or NFC is a new way of communicating via tags. The NFC Reader that comes with Android 3.2 can be used to read NFC tags and act upon information contained in it. Additionally, all downloads, whether from your browser, email, or other apps, are now managed in a centralized location. This gives the user convenient access to all downloaded content. The common download is managed by a new download manager, which can be used by different applications to store content in a single location. Also, Android 3.2 comes with the camera app, which gives you access to the multiple cameras on your device.

Corning Gorilla Glass 3

Corning Gorilla Glass 3 - a CES first look

When it comes to chemically-hardened glass, we smartphone types are definitely fans. When it comes to making our glass-fronted smartphones more durable, Corning has always been at the forefront, and their latest revelation in the form of Gorilla Glass 3 will prove to be even more of a protective force between our LCDs and the harsh world we live in.

We dropped in on Corning to check out its new Gorilla Glass 3, and in its demonstrations it lived up to the pre-show announcement hype. Gorilla Glass 3 is tougher in all forms when compared to its competition and even its predecessor in the form of Gorilla Glass 2. It can withstand greater impact force, is harder to scratch, and can stand up to forces that are capable of denting equally-thick steel. It's tough stuff, folks.
