• Android Market. "My apps" section shows a listing of all apps you've downloaded, updated and/or installed. You can dictate whether the apps will have updates automatically installed, and you can open each individual app directly from this section. This listing of My Apps also notices if any updates are available, keeps me apprised of download/install progress, and is easy to scroll through.
• Google Talk. The integration of native video chat and Google Talk app makes it more convenient and accessible for anyone to use it. Even if you have a tablet and your business partner doesn't, just have them sign on to Google Talk on their computer and you're all set for a good video chat.
• YouTube. The YouTube app was built with Renderscript, and it's easy to tell because of the extra 3D renderings done up here. The app is set up like a grid with several rows and columns, but when you scroll left or right this grid curves with the scrolling, acting as if it's on a carousel.

From a smaller developer viewpoint, Android is a difficult platform to work on. The amount of resources and time needed to code for a single application is significant for a small business; the need to re-code for various hardware and software versions is not conducive to building a customer base. Not only do variations in hardware and software affect the overall compatibility of the app, it reflects poorly on the build quality of the app. As a result, customers are naturally wary of the platform when they experience poor app quality and interaction. Developers are then compelled to write quick-and-dirty patches to resolve problems, which is inherently dangerous and shoddy programming.

Google needs to address this issue carefully. There are a number of underpowered phones that are running Android version 1.5 to extremely high-end powerful phones with the latest version of 2.0 available. Android's Marketplace has the potential to become this point, however, it would need to be flawlessly designed and integrated with all hardware. With the specialist technology that Google has recently acquired, it would make sense that the Marketplace may receive a revamp that may provide an interface for phones to remain updated via Google.

Remember when a phone was just a phone? If you needed to talk to someone, you used your phone and that was all it was good for.

These days my phone can do more cool things than the Tricorders we saw on Star Trek in the sixties. My Droid even has a sweet little app on it called "tricorder." So it got me to thinking about using my phone as a weight loss tool and when I went and searched the marketplace, I wasn't disappointed.

I found several apps that are perfect for helping you lose weight.

Some, like CalorieCounter and FitSynch are obvious while apps like RockOn might not be quite as obvious.

So let's jump into it with using your Android powered Smartphone to lose weight (nearly all these apps are available for the iPhone, by the way).

What You Eat

Most diet plans will tell you that it is critical you keep a food diary so you can keep track of all the food you're stuffing your face with. However, that easily becomes just another thing you can forget on the kitchen table when you're out and about. I know mine is frequently somewhere other than my purse.

My phone, on the other hand, may as well be attached to me - it goes with me everywhere. So getting a program like CalorieCounter on your is perfect. You can track everything throughout the day (and it does all the math of adding up calories and will even look up how many calories are in something) without having to keep track of a food diary.

Exercise

Exercise is a critical part of any successful weight loss program. And as you might have guessed there are plenty of apps you can download to help you stay on track with your exercise. Music

All Android phones do have a built in music player, but it's awful... the program I used for playing music on my computer in 1999 was better than this thing. Fortunately, free apps like RockOn are pretty good. Not quite iTunes good, but plenty good enough to queue up your favorite workout tunes.

Just remember that studies have shown that listening to music has been shown to increase workout intensity which means more calories burned and reduced body fat.

So there you have it - several apps you can use to put your phone to work for you in your goal to lose weight.
