Siri for the iPhone 4

Apple's new smartphone the 4S is making waves in the mobile phone world. It packs a 1 GHz dual-core processor. It sports an 8 megapixel camera that is capable of recording videos in 1080p. It comes with a 3.5 inch retina display that put its predecessor the iPhone 4 on the map. However, there is one feature that sets the Cupertino firm's new smartphone from the rest. This is the voice-controlled virtual assistant Siri. Since this new feature is creating such a craze among Apple enthusiasts you might be wondering if the app will be made available for older devices.
On the internet, a hacker was able to make the application work on the 4th generation iOS-powered smartphone. The first step was to jailbreak the iOS 5 running on the 4S. After which, he copied files on Apple's new handset that is required to make the virtual assistant work on the phone's predecessor. This also allowed him to make the application work on the iPod Touch.
Since this hacker was able to make Siri available for previous iOS-powered devices, you may be wondering if Apple has any plans of making the app available for the iPhone 4. Soon after a jail-broken version of the app hit the internet, there were reports that the Cupertino firm was testing the feature on previous models. The news excited iOS enthusiasts. However, this was but a dream.
Recently, Apple made its position clear on its personal assistant app being ported over to older devices. Unfortunately, it is not good news. According to the Cupertino-based tech giant, it would not be making the application available to their 4th generation smartphone anytime soon. This means that the app would stay exclusive to their new handset.
Although the 4S comes with impressive hardware and the latest iteration of the iOS, Siri does not come with highly demanding system requirements. This is one of the reasons why the hacker was successful in making the feature available for the iPhone 4. So what could be the reason behind keeping it exclusive to the new phone?
The answer is simple. Since Siri is a feature that makes this new addition to iPhones so unique, they would like to keep it that way. This will entice the consumer to choose to purchase the smartphone instead of just downloading the app for previous models. Like any business, this strategy is bent on amassing revenues from the sales of the 4S.
You might be asking yourself, "Will Siri ever be available for the iPhone 4?" Honestly, there's no way of telling what the Cupertino-based firms plans to do. All we can do now is hope.

Top 6 Calculator Apps For Android

The Samsung Galaxy S, Droid X, MyTouch 3G Slide, Evo 4, the list goes on and on. Many of the hottest smartphones on the market today run on Google's Android OS. With each new device released for Android, the buzz about the system grows.
A quick search of "calculator" on the Android Market returned about a thousand results, far than most people would like to sort through. You'll find dozens of tip calculators, BMI calculators, mortgage calculators, love calculators, and more that are probably not what you are looking for. Luckily for you, we've done the hard work of searching through all of those apps for you and found these 6 worthy of your consideration.
#1 - HandyCalc Calculator by mmin
HandyCalc Calculator is our choice for the top calculator available on Android today. This app give you a lot of the basic functionality of a TI-84, including all scientific calculator capabilities, graphing, and the ability to solve systems of equations. Answers can be returned in fraction and radical form or converted to decimals. There are also simple copy and paste capabilities, something that should be available in more apps. The app even comes with a demo doc and a link to a video tutorial. There's a lot to like here, and even if it's not perfect, it comes as close as anything we've seen.
Pros: Free, scientific and graphing capabilities, solves systems of equations, returns both exact answers for fractions/radicals as well as decimal approximations.
Cons: Missing features of a typical grapher such as max/min, intercepts, etc.; swiping between keypads presses buttons and feels awkward; two different "equals" buttons (which perform different functions) can be a bit confusing.
Cost: FREE
#2 - Scientific Calculator by Kreactive Technologies
Scientific Calculator had the nicest UI of any calculator app we reviewed. Buttons are attractive, with a nice top-lit effect, and a good size, making them easy to press. A flick scroll or double arrow button allows you to easily access scientific functions. The calculator does feature some basic graphing capabilities. This calculator comes very close to 2-line functionality. You can enter an entire calculation before pressing enter. Then you can return to previous calculations by long pressing the input area. There are more powerful apps on this list, but UI is important in an Android app, and Scientific Calculator has a great one.
Pros: Free, attractive UI, some functionality of a 2-line calculator, some graphing functionality
Cons: Graphing functions limited; comments in the market indicate some users confused by lack of +/- button, although we found this easy to work around.
Cost: FREE
#3 - Calculus Tools by Andy Mc
A fantastic calculator app for calculus students is Calculus Tools. As its name implies, this app is focused almost exclusively on calculus, so it's not for everyone. The app can find integrals as well derivatives up to the fourth degree, both algebraically as well as with with defined limits. It also has the ability to help you solve problems involving arc length, surface area, and Taylor series. Your results can also be graphed. The app also contains a pretty extensive list of formulas that calculus students have to memorize. The only real drawbacks with this app are that its scientific calculator mode is still in beta and fairly limited, and that all inputting must be done with your default keyboard.
Pros: Free, solve calculus functions symbolically or numerically, ability to graph functions, great "cheat sheet" of calculus formulas
Cons: Scientific calculator features still in beta, must use default keyboard instead of a custom math UI
Cost: FREE or $2.50 donate version
UPDATE: A math keyboard was added in an upgrade to Calculus Tools
#4 - Arity Calculator by Mihai Preda
Arity Calculator has a far different UI and capabilities from the other apps on this list. If you are looking for a good 3D grapher, this is it. You have the option to graph in either 2D or 3D, and simply pressing enter will take you to a clear prompt but will save your equation where it can easily be tapped if you need it later. We'd find it hard to recommend this calculator to a novice, but it's sharp 3D features will definitely appeal to many users. Arity is also an open source app.
Pros: Free, open source, fast, 3D capabilities, screenshots of graphs
Cons: Almost all commands (such as sin, cos, tan) have to be typed out; although you can navigate graphs and zoom in and out, there is no way to trace, find intercepts, etc.
Cost: FREE
#5 - RealCalc Scientific Calc by Brain Overspill
If you're looking for something comparable to a TI-30 (one line), the RealCalc Scientific Calc fits the bill. It's free, fast, and offers all the functionality of a standard scientific calculator. It also features an excellent help menu for new users. The UI isn't exactly the sexiest, but we are sure some will appreciate how much it authentically looks like a retro calculator. Although we'd have preferred to see an authentic two line display, the developer has provided a previous answer feature, which can be set to retrieve numerous previous results.
Pros: Free, fast, simple to use, offers functionality of a standard scientific calculator, Reverse Polish Notation option will appeal to some
Cons: One-line calculator interface, no graphing options, retro UI straight out of 1985 will not be for everyone
Cost: FREE
#6 - Calc+ by EricJohnson
Like many Android apps, Calc+ is available both in free and paid versions. The free version gets you the features you expect in a scientific calculator. The paid version offers the additional functionality of haptic feedback (vibrate) and unit conversions. In a clever UI decision the developer allows users to switch between a simple calculator and scientific mode by rotating rotating from portrait to landscape mode. The design is minimalistic, yet attractive. The biggest drawback to Calc+ is no ability to change from its default mode of radians into degrees.
Pros: Free version available, simple and attractive UI
Cons: One-line interface, trig calculations only in radians
Cost: FREE or $.99

What Is the Best Android Tablet

All of a sudden we have a new technology that has threatened to take the PC out of the market. I am sure old-school people and the die hard fans of the PC wouldn't agree to it, but the tablet PCs have become the newest best selling technology of 2011. At the end of the 2011 we can only hope that this new piece of technology brings in new surprises, as more and more research and development is done in this area.
When selecting an Android tablet the first thing one needs to do is to decide what is going to be the main feature of the tablet. I know most people would say I want everything, but if budget is a constrained and if you do not want to spend a cool $600 for an Android powered tablet then you need to make some choices.
The Samsung 10.1 is probably the closest thing that you will experience to an iPad on a Android platform. Smart, sleek and a highly captive screen, the Samsung is a great buy for people who are not price conscious and want a great tablet experience. The screen is sharp and the over all sleep design is extremely good to feel when using. It is also a great treat to watch movies on the 10.1 inch screen and plays most formats easily. However the absence of a USB port may be conspicuous for all windows users moving into Android. It has a front 2 MP camera and a rear 3 MP camera.
The next in the list is the Motorola Xoom which has been around for a while being the first tablet that had the Android 3.0 or Honeycomb operating system. It also has a 5 MP front camera and a 2 MP rear camera for taking really sharp images for a tablet standard. It also had 4G support and a 10 hour battery life making it a truly powerful tool to have.
The Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 is also a great product because of the detachable dock that allows it to be connected with a keyboard and used like a PC on the go. It has a Nvidia's Tegra 2 dual core CPU, which may not be its USP as a number of the other tablets are also using the same CPU to power their machines. The distinct advantage is the price which is £429 including the keyboard dock.
The next in the line is the A1CS X220 Tablet which comes with 2 USB ports and a MicroSD slot which means it does what the Samsung 10.1 doesn't, which is having a USB port. It has a 1GHz ARM11 processor and comes with 32 expandable storage and 512 MB of internal memory. The A1CS X220 Tablet comes with a 3G support using WI-FI which is less than what the Motorola Xoom does. But at £ 154.49 you do get a lot of features and that is what makes this one a great starting Android tablet.

Guide to Android Video Streaming

Mobile phone technology has come a long way in recent years. In fact, at the rate things are going, mobile technology now lets a user do most operations normally done on a personal computer. Android technology is a particularly good example of this. Similar to a computer, the software used in mobile devices includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. Features of Android phones include application frameworks, Dalvik virtual machine, integrated browser, and optimized graphics, SQLite for structure storage, media support, GSM telephony, bluetooth, WIFI, camera, and GPS.
With all these amazing features, every Android phone provides excellent streaming capabilities. Video streaming of sports events, movies, music and other media footage is an extremely popular activity. The advanced technology used by Android allows excellent Android video streaming capabilities.
The best way to get Android video streaming is to use Tversity and NSWPlayer. If you want to try this on your Android phone, there are some items that you will need to ensure the technology is properly utilized. Tversity must be installed on a personal computer, NSWPlayer must be installed on your Android phone, and a handbrake encoder for converting movies to lower resolution to optimize progressive playback. Once you have installed the items needed, there are some things to look at before you begin encoding your video. It is important to keep the video in high quality while making it the smallest size possible. It is also important to ensure the bit rate matches the resolution size. Once this is done, your video is ready to encode. Setup your handbrake encoder to minimize resolution and optimize playback quality. Remember that the speed of the whole process depends upon your personal computer's hardware specification. Next step is to set up Tversity for streaming. Go to the Transcoder section and under "when to transcode" select "never". Then go to the general settings section, and under home network enter in your computer's IP address, that way your phone has access to your video files.
Once the computer and phone are connected, install an Android media player that will pick up on progressive MP4. This is where the NSWPlayer is used. At this point in time, it is the only media player that works with Android. Streaming is now possible once all the above components are installed. For home Wi-Fi streaming, open your android phone web browser and input your computer's IP. From here navigate to Tversity's mobile WAP GUI and select it as your default player. Now, search for your favorite video and start streaming! The streaming quality may depend on your internet connection.
The pleasure of android video steaming is now yours to enjoy. If the above process seems complicated, seek advice from industry experts like Streaming Video Systems (SVS). They can help you install video streaming on your Android phone for personal or professional use.

Keeping Your Android Phone Secure

Today, having a phone as a means of communication is as normal as breathing but having a phone that surpasses just the normal calling, texting and perhaps the normal use of internet is something to be considered as great or 'cool' because what we now call a smartphone is a device to behold. How else can you explain an android phone that sends text messages, can receive and make a call, has a camera, can be a workstation when connected to the internet, one can listen to music and record or download it, watch videos, chat with friends or clients while using other applications on the same phone.
Imagine loosing your android phone that has all that because loosing it is like loosing your identity with contacts, text messages, photos, videos, reminders and so much more information saved up in the phone. But the good news is that there are some steps you can take to secure your smartphone, whether from ill intended people like thieves or cyber criminals.
Use the simplest of all, PIN (personal identification number)
Now, this has got to be the simplest and most common of all as every phone has a system where you can set up a pin and you're the only one who should know the PIN combinations to your phone. Always ensure your phone has a PIN that you have memorized. Even accessibility to your emails, company documents including internet access should be safely secured by a strong password or PIN.
Use tracking systems
Most phone manufacturers are producing smartphones with tracking systems in place. You can also download an application to that effect if your phone doesn't come with it. Some systems are quite sufficient and are able to wipe out your information remotely if the phone gets stolen so that your information won't be accessed or tampered with. The android phone for instance sends alert messages when sim cards are exchanged. You can also track it online using GPRS or cell towers and even view images caught by its spy camera.
Be alert!
Be ware of software, sites or programs that cannot be genuinely traced which can get to your credit card and private information that you probably don't want anybody to access. Cross check hyperlinks and their landing pages to ensure nothing is left to chance.
Update your phone
Just like computer or any other device updates, your smartphone should regularly get updated and not just for promotions or a catch somewhere but for security.
Choose the right software
Many offers on softwares are coming up but its best to choose softwares from a credited company and one that is mostly recommended everywhere, because software can be maliciously used to extract or damage your smartphone. Installing a strong antivirus on your android phone to guard against damaging soft wares and viruses is highly recommended.
Phone covers/bags
Many of you might think its silly or old fashioned but when your phone drops and hits a hard surface or goes into some place holding water you wont like it at all. So use a phone cover especially when moving around because it helps prevent the phone from breaking when it hits a hard surface or from immediate damage when it comes into contact with water. There are trendy smartphone covers and bags available everywhere so get one!
The old saying goes; you never know what you got till it's gone but don't let that be you when your phone is no more. Plus, safeguarding your phone and even other devices you have is better than having to repair them or worse having to replace them because they were stolen. Choose the right applications, softwares and programs for your android phone and keep in mind that your smartphone is as important to you as that car you drive or the house you live in because it holds much of your important information and even future decisions.

Some Basics About the Apple iPhone 4S

There was a lot of buzz as people anticipated the announcement of the Apple iPhone 5. However, when the time came and the release of a new iPhone model was announced, a lot of people were disappointed. Apparently, it's not the iPhone 5. What people can expect though from the visionary brand in the first parts of the last quarter of 2011 is the iPhone 4S. Do people really have a reason for being disappointed? Well, not if Siri has anything to say about it.
Who's Siri?
Siri is the intelligent assistant that every iPhone 4S has. It's voice-operated so you really simply just talk to your iPhone to get things done. Need an umbrella? Looking for burgers? Having trouble finding the nearest ATM? Just ask Siri. Siri understands what you mean and goes to work figuring out the right applications to use in order to give you the answer you need. Like any personal assistant, Siri is also capable of making phone calls, sending messages, scheduling meetings, setting reminders, and more.
Other features
If you visit the Apple page for the iPhone 4S, it would tell you that the phone was picking up where amazing left off. This means the iPhone 4S still had pretty much everything that made the iPhone 4 amazing. For starters, the phone is running on a dual-core processor for even more power, with an 8MP camera that shoots HD video, powered by the latest iOS and supporting iCloud services. Everything's clearer to look at too with the revolutionary Retina display. FaceTime is still there so you can make face-to-face calls with your loved ones and built-in applications that can do pretty much everything are also in place. With Apple TV, you can take advantage of wirelessly streaming your content to your HDTV from your iPhone via a feature known as AirPlay. Similar to the AirPlay is the AirPrint, a feature that lets you print documents from your Phone or web pages, photos, and email by utilizing wireless connections over Wi-Fi. No software to download. No cables. No drives. Just you, your iPhone, and your printouts.
Make better calls
The iPhone 4S is indeed a very, very smart smartphone. However, it doesn't forget that it is first and foremost a mobile phone, and mobile phones are made for making calls. This is why Apple made it a point to make sure that your iPhone 4S will indeed make it possible for you to make phone calls almost anywhere you are by fitting it with a feature that lets this iPhone switch intelligently between antennas when receiving and transmitting, resulting into better call quality.
Connect better
The iPhone 4S ability to switch antennas also helps it double the max data speeds that an HSDPA connection can offer so you are able to go online faster. From 7.2Mbps with the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S is now able to enjoy speeds of up to 14.4Mbps. Pretty impressive, right? And speaking of better connections, the iPhone 4S is what they would call as a world phone because it can tap into the GSM networks of 200 countries around the globe.

Iphone 4s Review

Sixteen months. 16 long months of waiting. Is the iPhone 4S worth it?

Apple fans have been waiting for the iPhone 5 no doubt. Many were expecting Apple and Steve Jobs to finally deliver the goods at Tuesdays October 4 keynote. But Steve didnt make it (god rest his soul) and Tim Cook made his first media appearance as CEO, and instead released the iPhone 4S.

So is it good, or not? Whats the real story? I submit to you my iPhone 4S Review.

Lets start with the good.

First off, the new dual core A5 chip. Its fast. REALLY fast two times faster than the chip in the iPhone 4 and 7 times faster graphics processing. The game play looks amazing sweet.

The camera has been upgraded also. 8 megapixel, autofocus, face detection for still pictures, and HD video recording up to 1080p at 30 frames per second. OMG!

Battery life has been improved up to 8 hours talk time on the 3G network, 14 hours on the GSM network, 10 hours of video playback time, 40 hours of audio playback, and standby time is clocked at 200 hours (8.3 days!)

Now lets move on to the great.

Voice control ala Siri. According to the Apple website, Siri not only understands what you say, it knows what you mean. It figures out the right apps to use to find the right answer. Then, just like a personal assistant, it answers you. Siri makes phone calls, sends messages, schedules meetings, sets reminders, takes dictation, and more. Siri understands what you say, knows what you mean, and even talks back. Imagine sending Tweets via your voice, or updating Facebook? Apple says that Siri is so easy to use and does so much, youll keep finding more and more ways to use it. Its first generation and will only improve, but wowzers.

Now for the bad.

It is not thinner, and it is heavier than its predecessor.

It doesnt feature a bigger touchscreen thats Android phones have had for at least a year, which Apple consumers have been begging for since kingdom come. Like the original iPhone 4, this model still has the same time 3.5-inch display screen.

Now the ugly.

No SD slot. If I am shooting a bunch of video, I am out of luck when space runs out until I connect to a computer I can sync with to get the videos I shot, out. Why no SD slot? Are you listening here Apple?

This phone also has no access to the high-speed 4G networks. None. How can it not, after all that time? Ugh!

It looks exactly like the iPhone 4. No difference at all. How dull.

The verdict?

Should you buy the new iPhone 4S? It releases October 14 to retail, pre-orders begin October 7. Only you can decide.
