I've been watching the space for nearly 30 years now, and it is clear that it really is finally starting to happen and at a much faster rate too - and the space I am talking about is the convergence of technology market place. Convergence means "coming together" and the technologies that are coming together at ever faster rates of change are computing, telephone and television. It was decades ago that the comic-book hero Dick Tracey had his little television built into his wrist-watch - and in 2010 you can have that as a real product with GPS also as part of the feature set. And in the last 2 years, it has been the advent of the smart-phone doing the rapid build-up in of what can be done and the three market heavy-weights are Blackberry, iPhone from Apple and Android from Google. Well, I guess there's also another major group of independent makers under the general heading of Chinese clones which tend to copy the feature set of the major brands.
The market leader at the moment in terms of sale's volume is the Android smart-phone operating system from Google and it is the front-runner in sales volume because of price, and what is generally referred to as "cool Android apps", meaning that the massive number of both free and paid for applications that you can download, install and run on the phone is massive with a capital-M. Humans being an emotionally driven creature will always find the money for what they want, and so Apple has done well with their iPhone's market penetration despite the very high price tag. But at a small fraction of the price, and with the phenomenon of "cool android apps" driving sales, the Android looks like being the clear market-share winner and without question the wide variety of games is a big component of these applications that are driving market acceptance. Check my resource box for one such website that has great information on the android applications, many of which are free.
