HTC have now released their upgrade handset to the Hero which is also known as the Touch G2 on T-Mobile, the new HTC Legend takes on a very similar design but incorporates some new technology and features not found in the original model.

The manufacture of the HTC Legend is also different to that of the Hero handset and closely resembles the recently released Google Nexus One (which is also manufactured by HTC) in as much as both phones are moulded from one piece of aluminium for extra robustness and strength.

The Legend handset has been released alongside the new HTC Desire as a more compact phone using the original dimensions of the Hero's touch screen at 3.2 inches. This seems to be pretty standard with many manufacturers such as the Sony Ericsson Vivaz, Nokia X6 and Motorola Milestone.

A major improvement over the previous HTC Hero is the inclusion of a new optical trackball rather than the rubbery one which is also found in the Nexus One phone, this new feature lets you simply slide your finger across to navigate the phones many screens and features.

This same technology id also present in the HTC Desire and means that even with extended use there is no chance of the wear and tear found on the older trackball solution.

The HTC Legend features a similar 5.0 mega pixel camera found in the older model which offers geo-tagging, auto focus and an LED flashlight for low light situations, the handset runs on the latest Android 2.1 operating system as found on the HTC Desire and Nexus One phones and over the top the manufacturer has included its own Sense user interface which make menu navigation a breeze.

This new HTC device also incorporates the new FriendStream application which pulls together updates from social networking sites like Facebook, tweets from Twitter, emails and text messages for a continuous stream of friend activity all in one place.

Unlike the previous Hero phone, the new HTC Legend's brushed aluminium body is far superior to the plastic finish of the older model, this should ensure the phones popularity as bringing this handset out of your pocket is likely to draw some attention.

The distinctive angled base of the phone remains unchanged from the Hero handset and although many think it is to bring the microphone closer to the mouth when in conversation it actually acts as a protector to the main touch screen when the phone is sat face down.

Should You Upgrade To Android's New Gingerbread 2.3

Google released their newest Android platform this week, Version 2.3, which they have named Gingerbread. The update enhances the user experience by increasing speeds and improving power management and text input. Several other improvements come from Gingerbread as well. I went ahead and upgraded my Sprint EVO 4G to the new platform this week. After the update, I continued to use the standard ROM I had been using on the 2.2 platform and I did notice a bit of a difference in the processing speed when opening applications, and my text input was slightly less frustrating than I had remember it being since switching to the EVO. So, yes, the 2.3 does enhance what it claims to enhance.

Now for the negative. I went to a couple different Android forums to find the latest and greatest ROMs for the 2.3 platform. I tried out two different ROMs and had nothing but trouble with both of them. I only chose ROMs that I had used the previous versions of on the 2.2 platform, as I knew they could be trusted. I first tried the upgraded ROM version of Myn, which I had used for a couple months on 2.2 and became quite a fan of. The Myn ROM booted all the way up one time, then rebooted and got stuck in a boot cycle. I tried deleting the Zip file and re-installing, but I just ran into the same problem.

I then moved on to CyanogenMod7 (CM7). CM is a very neat ROM that includes a ton of user tweaks. You can personalize your phone in an amazing amount of ways using CM. CM7 is no different. It was fun to have on my phone, but it did not include any of the Google apps, including the Market (which is pretty much essential). I found a patch for this problem, but flashing the patch sent my device into another boot-cycle. Another issue I saw is that there is no way to get the camera to save pictures to your SD card. It would only save them to the phone's memory, which is not ideal.

I ended up moving back to my previous ROM version. I would say that if you want to move to the Gingerbread platform, go right ahead. But if your reason for updating is to get the newer, cooler ROMs, you should hold off for a month or two until the tech-geniuses of the mobile world are able to get all the bugs worked out. The ROMs are simply unstable, not because of bad development, but because it is simply still new and should be considered to be in Beta.

What's New in Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich

Android's latest version, Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), has been out just over a month now. Since this version will be available on mobile phones as well as tablets, the market has seen a lot of great devices that are ready to take advantage of the new features that are available in 4.0. New Typeface

HTC Desire Hits Vodafone - HTC's Latest Android Phone

The new HTC Desire has found a second network partner in Vodafone, first launched on T-Mobile pay monthly deals just a couple of days ago the new Desire is HTC's newest Android phone and directly competes with the Google Nexus One which is also manufactured by HTC for the search engine giant.

The two models are very similar in terms of specifications, they both offer a very large 3.7 inch AMOLED touch screen display and high quality 5.0 mega pixel camera on the reverse, there are a couple of differences between the HTC Desire and Nexus One that could sway a consumers choice.

The Desire opts for HTC's own Sense user interface over the top of the Android operating system, this makes for a recognisable configuration for existing HTC phone users as well as a smooth user experience whist navigating the menu system and web surfing. Also present in the HTC Desire is support for Flash 10.1 straight out of the box which adds further to the internet experience being able to load even flash driven websites on screen.

Both phones offer a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, this is still the fastest processor currently available in the mobile phones market place and zips through loading new applications and runs with no lag time. The Desire does go one step further in terms of design and incorporates an optical navigation pad as opposed to the Google Nexus One's physical trackball solution which HTC Hero users will know can wear down over time.

HTC are also launching two new handsets alongside the Desire, these include the HTC HD Mini which is a smaller version of the Windows powered HD2 model with the huge 4.3 inch touch screen shrunk down to a manageable and pocket friendly 3.2 inches and the new HTC Legend which is a direct upgrade to the popular Hero phone with added technology and features.

Other manufacturers have competing phones in the shape of the Motorola Milestone, Sony Ericsson X10 and X10 Mini and the LG GT540 which are all Android powered devices. Non Android contenders include the Nokia X6 and Nokia N900, HTC Touch 2, Samsung Omnia 2 and Samsung Omnia Pro.

The HTC Desire is also set for more network launches over the coming weeks with confirmation from Orange that they too will be stocking this high specification device on their network, others have yet to confirm their intentions with O2 probably the one that most will want to hear from.

In a venting of the spleen I wrote in March, I argued that AT&T should buy you a free femtocell if you're having troubles connecting to the company's 3G mobile phone network.

Then on Saturday, Engadget reported one AT&T customer got just what I sought. AT&T sent the customer a letter that he could collect one at the local AT&T store, but told Engadget it was only a market trial.

For background, a femtocell is a small radio transceiver that plugs into your broadband network connection so you needn't rely on that feeble signal from a central cell phone tower. Ordinarily, AT&T sells its version of the product, called the Microcell, for $150.

Props to AT&T for testing the waters for free femtocells. Presumably the company has got some data about just which cell towers are most overloaded and which nearby customers particularly suffer dropped calls, so perhaps judicious allocation of freebies could ease its woes and restore its reputation a bit.

Look at it this way: In giving a femtocell away, AT&T of course adds a new expense and, for some small fraction of customers who might buy a femtocell, cuts off a revenue stream. But the cost--and you can bet AT&T doesn't pay the full $150 retail price for the hardware--doesn't have to be money squandered.

How much does it cost AT&T to mollify irate customers who harangue customer support representatives? How much extra does wooing a new customer cost in the face of the bad reputation earned by griping iPhone users? How much customer churn could be avoided if squeaky wheels were oiled and those with subscribers didn't dump AT&T the moment their two-year contracts finished?

Sending out femtocell freebies ain't cheap, but maybe it's a worthy investment.

Update at 1:55 a.m. PDT July 13: A CNET reader who got a similar letter on Saturday (see image below, with identifying information redacted) took AT&T up on its offer--although AT&T store staff initially hadn't heard of the offer when asked to confirm its legitimacy, and the first store visited had no Microcells in stock.

A free-femtocell offer letter one CNET reader received. Personal information, including name, address, and an offer barcode, have been removed.

Apparently others have received similar letters. At the second store, the reader said, "they'd had quite a few calls like mine--'Is this genuine?' 'Are there any catches?'" After installing the femtocell and waiting for it to sync with the GPS system for e-911 support, all is well:

"Max bars in the whole house," the reader said. "Maybe I should advertise as a cell tower for the neighbors and pick up some side money. It does allow you to selectively add other AT&T phones, after all."

It's not clear why the reader got the offer. "I have no hard facts to go on. I have used the 'Mark The Spot' app quite a bit as I seem to be in an odd corner of cell reception. I also had actually quit AT&T at one time and changed my mind a couple weeks later. That's all that makes me stand out," the reader said.

"It is a really nice thing that AT&T has done--great PR and image control," the reader added. "But what about the people that had bought the Microcells even as late as Friday? I bet there will be a hot time in the old front office with the people marching around the AT&T headquarters with torches like something out of 'Young Frankenstein.'"

Another reader who didn't get the free femtocell offer, Anthony DeMaio, is interested in the technology even if it's not entirely free. He said he plans to buy the Microcell with AT&T's $150 rebate that comes with a $20-per-month unlimited talk and data plan with the femtocell.

"It seems like $20 a month is not too bad when you're making calls at home, seeing as most people use their cell phones as a primary contact nowadays," DeMaio said. "So I plan to get rid of my home phone bill (about $45 a month) and use the Microcell with my mobile number instead. That way I save $25 a month!"
