Samsung R910 Metro PCS - Examining the Latest LTE Capable Android Smartphone

Metro PCS, one of the world's leading communications service providers, has been working doubly hard to roll out fresh technological devices that would beef up the brand's reputation in the industry. Last September 2010, they became the first firm to introduce an LTE Network in North America. However, the firm lacked the tools needed to showcase what this technology is capable of doing and so gained little buzz in the market. In November though, they followed it up with a release of the LG Optimus M, which is their first ever Android smartphone device. To prove their dedication to expand their brand, a new Samsung R910 Metro PCS is set to unveil soon.
There were several images of the R910 that was released on the internet. When Samsung officially announced the R910 soon after those leaked images came out, they finally came forward with what is going to be the first Android powered LTE device on the market. The release date for this device remains to be speculated although many industry analysts believe that spring or the first quarter of 2011 might be the ideal time for its release. This won't be the first smartphone from Samsung that would take advantage of the LTE network from Metro PCS since SCH-R900 from Samsung is the one to earn that recognition when it released last year.

The specifications for the Samsung R910 Metro PCS are limited at this point. However, there is only little technical information available to give consumers a slight hint on what to expect with this new device. It will run on the TouchWiz user interface, which is the same kind of interface used with other Android smartphones from Samsung. This LTE capable Android smartphone is equipped with 1GHz Hummingbird processor, Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, along with on-board CDMA and LTE radio.
This device is equipped with a sliding QWERTY keyboard and boasts off a 3.5-inch touch screen display with multi-touch functionality. As with most modern cell phone units today, the Samsung R910 is equipped with a camera that comes with 5-megapixel resolution and features an advanced auto focus system. It is also integrated with a good mix of standard and innovative features including Bluetooth 3.0, computer & OTA synchronization, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, HTML browser support, GPS navigation, compass, MP3 & polyphonic ring tones, and a voice recording function. However, its most distinctive feature is the fact that this smartphone features an expandable memory courtesy of the micro SD or SDHC card slot.
The pricing information for Samsung R910 Metro PCS is still unknown as of now. However, estimates suggest that it will start at $329 and could go up to $399 for no contract. Most consumers would be willing to shell out $500 to $600 for an Android smartphone so this could prove to be a bargain.
The new Samsung R910 Metro PCS is still shrouded with mystery, for the most part. No further details have been revealed yet and the prices are mere estimates at this point. However, there is one thing that's sure about this phone - it's going to be a great addition to the long list of smart phones.

The Google Nexus S measures 123.9x 63x 10.9 mm and weighs in at 129 g. It is therefore rather pocket friendly and slimline considering the amount of technology within. The facia is dominated by a generously proportioned 4 inch super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen which utilises a pixel layout of 480x 800 to display up to 16 million colours. The screen has an impressive spec list in its own right, boasting features including multi-touch input support, touch-sensitive shortcut panel, proximity, accelerometer and gyro sensors, and an oleophobic surface which prevents the build up of fingerprints and smudges when using the touch screen.

Due to this level of storage, the need for a microSD slot or any other expandable storage is simply not necessary.
Whilst GPRS & EDGE keep the handset connected to the appropriate cellular networks on the move, Google Nexus S relies on 3G coverage for its initial means of Internet access, whereby an HSDPA connection provides download speeds of up to 7.2 mega bytes per second. In order to enjoy a faster Internet browsing experience, users can take advantage of local wireless networks thanks to full Wi-Fi connectivity. Of course the standard Bluetooth and micro USB connections also included allowing users to connect to compatible hardware devices.

The Google Nexus S is also a competent camera phone boasting 5 mega pixel offering which operates at 2560x 1920 pixels, resulting in still images of the utmost clarity and quality. Auto-focus, touch-focus and an LED flash are all provided to improve the quality of photos, and simultaneously simplify the task of taking them. Geo-tagging is included which, thanks to GPS, automatically tracks the location at which photos were taken. As an alternative to taking still images, users also have the luxury of shooting video footage using this camera, and this is in WVGA quality at a rate of 30 frames per second. An additional VGA camera is located on the front of the phone, allowing video calls to take place.
Google has included the latest version of its wildly popular Android OS, version 2.3 aka Gingerbread. In conjunction with a 1 GHz processor, users are guaranteed a fast user experience and a powerful platform for customising their phone with downloadable apps from the Android Market. The standard list of features includes numerous multimedia and entertainment applications as well as productivity calls and social networking integration.
As you can see, the Google Nexus S is one of the most advanced Smartphones available, utilising the best available hardware and software alike. This is a Smartphone which ticks all the boxes and is futureproof thanks to its operating system which is upgradeable when new versions are released.

HTC Legend Joins Vodafone - Latest HTC Android Phone

HTC have now released their upgrade handset to the Hero which is also known as the Touch G2 on T-Mobile, the new HTC Legend takes on a very similar design but incorporates some new technology and features not found in the original model.
The manufacture of the HTC Legend is also different to that of the Hero handset and closely resembles the recently released Google Nexus One (which is also manufactured by HTC) in as much as both phones are moulded from one piece of aluminium for extra robustness and strength.
The Legend handset has been released alongside the new HTC Desire as a more compact phone using the original dimensions of the Hero's touch screen at 3.2 inches. This seems to be pretty standard with many manufacturers such as the Sony Ericsson Vivaz, Nokia X6 and Motorola Milestone.
A major improvement over the previous HTC Hero is the inclusion of a new optical trackball rather than the rubbery one which is also found in the Nexus One phone, this new feature lets you simply slide your finger across to navigate the phones many screens and features.
This same technology id also present in the HTC Desire and means that even with extended use there is no chance of the wear and tear found on the older trackball solution.

The HTC Legend features a similar 5.0 mega pixel camera found in the older model which offers geo-tagging, auto focus and an LED flashlight for low light situations, the handset runs on the latest Android 2.1 operating system as found on the HTC Desire and Nexus One phones and over the top the manufacturer has included its own Sense user interface which make menu navigation a breeze.
This new HTC device also incorporates the new FriendStream application which pulls together updates from social networking sites like Facebook, tweets from Twitter, emails and text messages for a continuous stream of friend activity all in one place.
Unlike the previous Hero phone, the new HTC Legend's brushed aluminium body is far superior to the plastic finish of the older model, this should ensure the phones popularity as bringing this handset out of your pocket is likely to draw some attention.
The distinctive angled base of the phone remains unchanged from the Hero handset and although many think it is to bring the microphone closer to the mouth when in conversation it actually acts as a protector to the main touch screen when the phone is sat face down.
Competitors to the Legend include the HTC Desire form the same stable as well as the newly released Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, there are also good Android alternatives from other manufacturers including the Motorola Milestone, Samsung Galaxy Portal, Acer Liquid and LG GW620.
The Legend is now available on a range of third party Vodafone pay monthly tariffs from free with further network launches expected over the coming days.
The HTC Legend and recently released HTC Desire are two of a growing number of new Android mobile phones launching this year.

Should You Upgrade To Android's New Gingerbread 2.3

Google released their newest Android platform this week, Version 2.3, which they have named Gingerbread. The update enhances the user experience by increasing speeds and improving power management and text input. Several other improvements come from Gingerbread as well. To get a full run-down, you can do a Google search for Android 2.3 Platform Highlights.
I went ahead and upgraded my Sprint EVO 4G to the new platform this week. After the update, I continued to use the standard ROM I had been using on the 2.2 platform and I did notice a bit of a difference in the processing speed when opening applications, and my text input was slightly less frustrating than I had remember it being since switching to the EVO. So, yes, the 2.3 does enhance what it claims to enhance.

Now for the negative. I went to a couple different Android forums to find the latest and greatest ROMs for the 2.3 platform. I tried out two different ROMs and had nothing but trouble with both of them. I only chose ROMs that I had used the previous versions of on the 2.2 platform, as I knew they could be trusted. I first tried the upgraded ROM version of Myn, which I had used for a couple months on 2.2 and became quite a fan of. The Myn ROM booted all the way up one time, then rebooted and got stuck in a boot cycle. I tried deleting the Zip file and re-installing, but I just ran into the same problem.
I then moved on to CyanogenMod7 (CM7). CM is a very neat ROM that includes a ton of user tweaks. You can personalize your phone in an amazing amount of ways using CM. CM7 is no different. It was fun to have on my phone, but it did not include any of the Google apps, including the Market (which is pretty much essential). I found a patch for this problem, but flashing the patch sent my device into another boot-cycle. Another issue I saw is that there is no way to get the camera to save pictures to your SD card. It would only save them to the phone's memory, which is not ideal.
I ended up moving back to my previous ROM version. I would say that if you want to move to the Gingerbread platform, go right ahead. But if your reason for updating is to get the newer, cooler ROMs, you should hold off for a month or two until the tech-geniuses of the mobile world are able to get all the bugs worked out. The ROMs are simply unstable, not because of bad development, but because it is simply still new and should be considered to be in Beta.

What's New in Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich

Android's latest version, Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), has been out just over a month now. Since this version will be available on mobile phones as well as tablets, the market has seen a lot of great devices that are ready to take advantage of the new features that are available in 4.0. Many of these updates are simply upgrades to some of the already existing features in the operating system. This article talks about what these new features are all about.
New Typeface
The old font, "Droid Sans" is out and a new font, "Roboto" is in. Roboto is a typeface designed for the small, high-resolution screens that mobile phone and tablet users have and brings a slick, updated feel to the interface.
Spell-Checker
In ICS, the dictionary and spell-checking have been updated for better error correction and word suggestion. They have tried to improve the identification of double-typed characters, missing spaces and skipped letters. Word suggestion will now only show three words at a time in the suggestion strip. Spell-checker is probably the best improvement in this group since it will now underline misspelled words and suggest replacement words. You can also add words to the dictionary if it is not recognized.
Screenshots
Taking screenshots is often an important feature for some users and now you do not need to tamper with your Android device or install third-party apps in order to take them. You can now take a screenshot by holding down the volume down key and the power button. This will capture the screen and put it in your photos.
Voice Commands
Android 4.0 now has the capability to receive voice commands. You can use the talk-to-text feature to give your phone commands or dictate text messages.

Updated Camera
While previous versions of Android's camera were lacking, there have been some great improvements with 4.0 that were gained with some help from Samsung. The camera was also the area where the most upgrades are happening. ICS devices will now have 1080p video, the shutter lag has been removed, easier photo and video sharing, tap-to-focus, face detection, photo filters, and a photo-stitching panorama mode that allows you to move the camera to take one continuous picture.
Many of these features have been long-awaited by Android fans. There is even various photo editing tools to clean up your pictures and easier ways to share with Google+, text message, Bluetooth, Email and Picasa.
Better Browser
The standard browser is the new Chrome mobile Web browser that syncs bookmarks with other versions of Chrome that you have on your desktop or laptop as well as other mobile/tablet devices. The browser can now save pages for offline reading which is great when you are on the road and unsure of your signal availability. Chrome mobile has been updated greatly for speed and now has the capability to open up to 16 tabs for your multi-tasking pleasure.
Android Bump
Sharing information with other Android devices has become a lot easier with a secure Near Field Communication (NFC) app called Android Bump. Based on the NDEF Push technology, this application will allow two Android devices to share websites, maps, contacts, applications and play games together.
Copy and Paste
Copy and paste functionality got a re-vamp and is much easier to use. You can now move around whole blocks of text.
This update only shows how committed Google is to making Android the top mobile operating system. As you can see, there are many great new features in Ice Cream Sandwich that make it a top contender in the mobile and tablet market. This also shows that we can expect many more great new things from Android in the future.

HTC Desire Hits Vodafone - HTC's Latest Android Phone

The new HTC Desire has found a second network partner in Vodafone, first launched on T-Mobile pay monthly deals just a couple of days ago the new Desire is HTC's newest Android phone and directly competes with the Google Nexus One which is also manufactured by HTC for the search engine giant.
The two models are very similar in terms of specifications, they both offer a very large 3.7 inch AMOLED touch screen display and high quality 5.0 mega pixel camera on the reverse, there are a couple of differences between the HTC Desire and Nexus One that could sway a consumers choice.
The Desire opts for HTC's own Sense user interface over the top of the Android operating system, this makes for a recognisable configuration for existing HTC phone users as well as a smooth user experience whist navigating the menu system and web surfing. Also present in the HTC Desire is support for Flash 10.1 straight out of the box which adds further to the internet experience being able to load even flash driven websites on screen.
Both phones offer a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, this is still the fastest processor currently available in the mobile phones market place and zips through loading new applications and runs with no lag time. The Desire does go one step further in terms of design and incorporates an optical navigation pad as opposed to the Google Nexus One's physical trackball solution which HTC Hero users will know can wear down over time.

HTC are also launching two new handsets alongside the Desire, these include the HTC HD Mini which is a smaller version of the Windows powered HD2 model with the huge 4.3 inch touch screen shrunk down to a manageable and pocket friendly 3.2 inches and the new HTC Legend which is a direct upgrade to the popular Hero phone with added technology and features.
Other manufacturers have competing phones in the shape of the Motorola Milestone, Sony Ericsson X10 and X10 Mini and the LG GT540 which are all Android powered devices. Non Android contenders include the Nokia X6 and Nokia N900, HTC Touch 2, Samsung Omnia 2 and Samsung Omnia Pro.
The HTC Desire is also set for more network launches over the coming weeks with confirmation from Orange that they too will be stocking this high specification device on their network, others have yet to confirm their intentions with O2 probably the one that most will want to hear from.
The HTC Desire and HTC Legend are two of many new Android phones to make an appearance in 2010.

Discover The Latest Three Sprint Android Phones

Sprint mobile has a reasonable selection of Android phones with eleven currently available. The current three most popular Sprint Android phones are the HTC EVO 4G, the Samsung Epic 4G, and the new Nexus S 4G. The most notable feature that all three of the above phones have is 4G-web browsing. These three phones are the only phones from Sprint that are able to take advantage of Sprint's 4G WiMax network. This gives you much quicker internet browsing speeds in comparison to other Smartphone's on 3G. The down side to 4G is that your battery will not last as long as when you are using 3G. Read on to find out the advantages of each phone.
The Samsung Epic 4G's biggest difference to the EVO and Nexus is the large easy to use physical QWERTY keyboard. The Epic has one of the most popular keyboards out of all the Androids. Hence, it is an excellent choice for physical keyboard enthusiasts. Other popular features are the high quality display (Super AMOLED screen); front facing 1.3-mega-pixel VGA camera; WiFi hot spot capabilities for up to five devices; and quick daily operating speeds with its 1 GHz processor. The somewhat large and bulky Epic has raised some criticism for its design and is reasonably expensive at 180 Dollars from your local Sprint store with a two-year contract.

The HTC EVO 4G has the advantage of having a more impressive 8-mega-pixel rear camera versus the 5-megapixel cameras in the Nexus and Epic. The EVO has WiFi hot spot connectivity for up to 8 devices, similar operating speed to the Epic and Nexus with a 1GHz snapdragon processor, and a large 4.3 Inch touch screen. The battery live of the EVO is poor and will cause you to re-charge regularly.
The Nexus S has only recently hit the stores and is the latest addition to Sprint's Android devices. As a result, the Nexus has the advantage of running on the latest operating system from Android, commonly called Gingerbread (Android 2.3). The combination of 4G and Gingerbread makes the Nexus an attractive phone. Both the Epic and the HTC EVO ship with the dated Android 2.1 operating system. It is expected that an official update to Gingerbread will be available for the EVO and the Epic in the near future. For advanced Android users who have 'rooted' their Android phones there are unofficial updates available online to install Gingerbread. The Nexus is Sprint's first 'pure-Google Android' phone. This is a popular feature, as the interface does not have manufacture overlays like the Epic and EVO. This results in quicker updates to the latest Android operating systems because the manufacture interface does not need to be re-programmed to handle new operating system updates. From a cosmetic preference there are a number of users that prefer the standard Google interface versus the HTC and Samsung interfaces. The Nexus ships with a 4 inch "Contour" Super AMOLED display, a quick 1 GHz Hummingbird processor, a front facing VGA 1.2 mega pixel camera, WiFi hot spot ability and has Google voice. For media lovers looking for extra storage the down side to the Nexus is there is no external memory slot.
