Nexus 4

Finally get your Nexus 4? We'll help get you started

LG Nexus 4
It looks like Google finally is getting a handle on its Nexus 4 supply/retail issues. Its flagship Jelly Bean phone went back on sale this week and boxes should be hitting doorsteps anytime now. For a good many of you, this will be your first time with the Nexus 4. For others, it'll be the first time with any Nexus.
So where to begin? Even if you've had an Android smartphone in the past, a Nexus is both familiar and new, full of options some other smartphones don't have, while at the same time lacking features other manufacturers pack into their own phones.
Let's take a look at some of the thing new Nexus 4 owners need to know, need to watch out for -- and need to take advantage of.

1. Where to start

If you haven't already, have a look at our Nexus 4 review, and Alex's two-month revisit. That's an excellent place to start.

2. There's a lot of glass on this thing

Nexus 4
Pro tip: Do not stand on your Nexus 4
First thing you notice out of the box. Glass on the front, glass on the back. And, yes. Glass can break. Some folks have broken their Nexus 4s. Some haven't. You might have heard stories about them shattering on carpet. Or simply by being placed onto a counter or table or something. Stranger things have happened, I suppose. I don't think there's been the sort of uproar you'd see with a true design flaw or anything. Sometimes glass breaks. Be careful.
Glass also scratches. The front's covered in Gorilla Glass 2, scratches will still happen. I've got a couple nice ones (from my dog's nails, I think) on mine. The back of the phone's not immune either. On the other hand, I don't use cases.

3. The Nexus 4 is SIM-unlocked

This is one of the major features of Nexus phones. They're "SIM-unlocked," meaning you can use any GSM SIM card in it without needing an unlocking code. And because it's set up with the proper frequencies, you can use it on T-Mobile or AT&T in the United States and get proper HSPA+ speeds.
You might still have to handle the APN settings yourself, though. Chances are if that's necessary, there will be instructions from whomever you got the SIM card from.

4. And then there's the other kind of 'unlocked'

The other great thing about a Nexus phone is that it's designed to be tinkered with. To that end, you'll need to unlock the bootloader. That's as simple as typing fastboot oem unlock in a command line with your phone plugged in. Once that's done (we've got some help here if you need it), you'll be able to flash new system images. That means it's easy to load up custom ROMs. And then there's ...

5. It's easy to gain root access on the Nexus 4

Again, it's a Nexus. Getting root access (also referred to as "rooting") is trivial -- just a matter of flashing a new image once the bootloader is unlocked. There's a great guide for rooting the Nexus 4 in our forums.
But you know what? A lot of us don't root our phones. And that's perfectly fine (and more secure), too.

6. "Stock" Android is great, but you can make it even better

We mentioned that the Nexus 4 doesn't have all the features that other manufacturers put into their phones. The idea is to ship the bare Android experience for folks to customize their own way from Google Play. Don't like the stock messaging application? Get a new (and arguably improved) one from Google Play. The same goes for things like the keyboard, the camera software, the music player, etc. Android is all about choice, and even system applications are replaceable.

7. Set up your cloud accounts

Because the Nexus 4 ships with limited storage, you'll want to get used to using the cloud. Google offers some great applications that are already tied into the account you used to set up the phone. Google Music will let you store up to 20,000 of your own songs and streams them back at 320kbps, Google Drive (formerly Google Docs) offers 5GB of free file storage in addition to powerful document editing and creation. Google+ is a great way to store pictures, and Youtube is the place to store the video you create.
There are plenty of other "cloud apps" to take advantage of as well. Netflix and apps from your cable or satellite company offer streaming video on-demand, or you can rent (and buy) movies and TV shows right in Google Play. Apps like Dropbox or SugarSync can handle all your file storage needs if the 5GB from Google Drive isn't enough, and the list of streaming music services is a long one. The cloud takes some getting used to, but it really does work.

8. Set up your Google account and services

Even if you don't plan on using Google's cloud services, setting up your online presence through Google is a good idea. You Nexus 4 comes with a full suite of applications from Google, and as soon as you logged into your Nexus 4 the first time you activated them all under your account. Google+ is a great way to socialize with your friends (you'll find all of us from AC there chatting it up) and includes a powerful group messaging application as part of the app. Other apps like Currents and Chrome sync with your Google account, and of course you have Gmail, Google contacts, and Google calendar which are some of the best apps in mobile today. Go ahead and explore these apps, and dig into the settings to get everything to your liking.

9. Set up the way your Nexus 4 sounds

Every app that can notify you makes a noise, and with Android every one of them is user-set. You'll find a handful of notification tones and ringtones available, and adding your own is easy. Collect the files you want to use (.mp3 and .ogg files are supported) and copy them right to the device. If you're using a Mac you'll need to download the file transfer utility, but Windows is supported out of the box. Just plug your Nexus 4 in and open the folder in your file explorer. Ringtones go into the folder named "Ringtones", notification sounds go into the folder named "Notifications", and alarm sounds go into the folder named "Alarms". Afterwards, your new choices will appear right in the list, ready to use. Finally, there are apps in Google Play that let you schedule the volume based on time, so your phone stays quiet during work hours or while sleeping.

10. Visit the forums

Getting a Nexus 4 puts you in a special club. You'll want to chat with other folks about your new phone, learn and share important tips and tricks, and find out about great new apps that make the Nexus 4 even better. The forums is the perfect place to make all that happen. For visiting from your phone, there's evena great application that keeps you in touch while you're away from the house. We'll see you there!

iphone data plan

Subscribing to your network data plan is an extra utility expense on your own regular expenses. When you at first applied for a data plan along with your network, you would expect much more ease and comfort in terms of communication and accessibility at any time anywhere. On the other hand, it's not at all generally recognized to most subscribers that some networks who claim to cater to your communication needs have costs that aren't clear to you. Also, it is essential that a consumer has to be well informed and knowledgeable with the system procedures that their mobile device are processing in times that they don't know of.
Take for example each time a Smart Phone refreshes its network connectivity and configures its mobile web capabilities, we don't understand that there are program processes that operate in the background which basically needs a connection and eventually do we know that charges have been placed in the course of such procedures. We are amazed to check our billing record that exhibits a whooping amount of charges. It is additionally secure that we personally configure our interconnection settings than have it instantly connect to the internet in times that will require of it.
A lot of applications in the app store can guide you and direct you towards determining your data plan charges. Such programs feature a handbook configuration of the designated free call and text message allocations on your own Apple iPhone based mostly from your regular free allocations. It exhibits a screen prompt to remind and warn you in case you have actually consumed your free call minutes and number of free SMS messages delivered. What exactly is finest about these apps is, you could configure the settings to eliminate all your outgoing communication to guarantee that you don't go beyond your per month data plan consumption. However, you can do or else, with just a warning message which will prompt on screen reminding you regarding it.
Another excellent addition for your iPhone is getting an iPhone insurance policy for it. An insurance policy specifically for your iPhone guarantees you of whole defense against damages got accidentally, whether it's through actual scratches or exposure to fluid. It also shields your Apple iPhone from unwanted deceptive phone calls that will burden you in your data plan bills in incidents of loss or theft. Your computer data plan monitoring application will be doubled with all the deceptive calls manage protection that the iPhone insurance provides you with. The application plus the insurance just right goes with your iPhone, no question.
In this way you will be quite mindful of what charges will appear on your billing statement. You're very much at ease by doing this, not having to worry about secret charges or excessive use of your data plan allocation which will take your credit limit to the maximum. Nevertheless, these apps can significantly suggest that having an Apple iPhone is a smart move and not a rather vain and luxurious one.
Love your iPhone 4 by shielding it with extensive iPhone 4 insurance. Get your Apple smart phone insured from theft, loss and unintended damages with fraudulent call insurance too. iPhone insurance, check it out today.

Corning Gorilla Glass 3

Corning Gorilla Glass 3 - a CES first look

When it comes to chemically-hardened glass, we smartphone types are definitely fans. When it comes to making our glass-fronted smartphones more durable, Corning has always been at the forefront, and their latest revelation in the form of Gorilla Glass 3 will prove to be even more of a protective force between our LCDs and the harsh world we live in.

We dropped in on Corning to check out its new Gorilla Glass 3, and in its demonstrations it lived up to the pre-show announcement hype. Gorilla Glass 3 is tougher in all forms when compared to its competition and even its predecessor in the form of Gorilla Glass 2. It can withstand greater impact force, is harder to scratch, and can stand up to forces that are capable of denting equally-thick steel. It's tough stuff, folks.

new iphone software

iPhone software downloads are sure to be in great demand in the coming months. Apple's iPod has been a supreme success story over the last decade or so. Now, the latest generation of Apple technology lets you combine your cell phone with your entertainment. In this article you'll find out the story behind software downloads for your Iphone, and how to get them for free.
Apple have introduced a policy towards third party companies of only letting them produce peripheral devices, and not software directly for the iPhone. The software inherent in the iPhone has already been hacked, and pirate firms on the web are selling programs which allow the user to override the integrated software, and connect to networks other than the ones which Apple has programmed the machine to work with. Apple, of course, desperately don't want this to happen, and they have stated quite explicitly that if any of the hacked software is used, the guarantee will no longer be valid.

It is quite possible that Apple will soon bring out an updated version of their software, to try and invalidate the software that the hackers have developed. It isn't certain at this stage whether or not the software is fatally affected by this, but you can be sure it one of the priorities, given Apple's openly aggressive stance, and the potentially massive profits that will be made from this in the coming months. One of the other reasons given for the new update is that it will allow the iTunes music store to be reached via Wi-Fi. You can get this feature as part of the iPhone software downloads.
If you are on the look out for genuine Apple software that can be used within the guidelines laid down by Apple, then it will be heartening to learn that Apple has promised to continually improve the standard of the iPhone software, and also that all future updates will be free. The hackers will no doubt be watching, and ready to counter with their own new solution. It will doubtless turn into a kind of chess game between the hackers, and Apple's own software developers, with each desperately trying to counter the moves of the other as quickly as possible. Time will tell us how clever the software developers at Apple will become. Keep your eye on the latest iPhone software downloads.

Chronus

CM nightlies start the year with a new widget - 'Chronus'

Chronus
If you're running CyanogenMod nightlies on your Android device, you'll notice a little something new in this evening's builds. Aptly named Chronus, it's a widget that's a conglomeration of the clock, weather. and calendar, and it's fully customizable. The idea of more information in one widget isn't anything new, but this one looks like it is very well done. Hopefully the clock typography is one of the custom settings.
It will sit happily on either your home screen or lock screen, and display differently based on the size. On your phone, the lock screen widget is like the standard Android clock widget, meaning that you'll need to swipe down to see it all, but on the home screen you can set the size as you would expect. Tablets display the full size lock screen as they do with the standard Android clock.
This is why open-source wins. Google releases a bare-bones version with all the necessary information for folks to take it and create something great from it. For now, you'll need to run a CM nightly to have this one, but we expect someone to pull it out and publish on Google Play for all devices if possible. Be sure to grab tonight's build for your device and check it out.

HTC One VX

HTC One VX unboxing and video walkthrough

HTC One VX
Behold, the HTC One VX on AT&T. More than a One V, less than a One X, and dancing right around the noble One S without giving it as much as a mention in its already convoluted name. We've gone hands-on with the One VX a couple times since it was announced in early October, and it's now available for purchase, having missed its original launch date by a few weeks.

More: Full HTC One VX specs

So what, exactly, is the One VX? In a single sentence, it borrows bits and pieces from the entire HTC One line for a mid-range smartphone that as of now is exclusive to AT&T.
Physically speaking, it's a tad smaller than the One X, but less of a curvy box and more of a sleek and sexy One S. The back is done in the same white polycarbonate shell as AT&T's original One X. (Remember that the One X+ moved to a soft-touch coating.) And the One S is more svelte than the One VX, about 2 mm slimmer, with different curves, and it's a tad shorter and narrower, too. The One VX its between the One S and One X in screen size, too, at 4.5 inches. And while it only has a 540x960 qHD resolution, the move to Super LCD 2 from AMOLED makes a noticeable difference.

Droid DNA

First images surface of Verizon employee exclusive Droid DNA

Android Central
It's kind of teasing posting up photos of a device most people can't buy, but when it looks like this it's definitely worth a mention. What we see here is the first shots of the Verizon employee exclusive Droid DNA, obtained by the guys over at Droid-Life. It's a regular old DNA at heart, but instead of the black back on the regular one, Verizon staff get theirs in a pretty impressive shade of red. And, since Verizon devices aren't short on logos, this DNA is absolutely no exception. In addition to the usual stuff, it also comes stamped as a “Verizon Employee Limited Edition.” It's not likely to hit everyone's tastes, but it sure stands out in a crowd.

ClockWorkMod recovery

Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 get an official ClockWorkMod recovery

CWM
Koush has released the official builds of ClockWorkMod recovery for the LG Nexus 4 and the Samsung Nexus 10 this afternoon, giving us all a quick and easy way to back everything up and flash bleeding-edge stuff and try to break out new Nexus devices.
You'll find them in the usual places -- the ClockWorkMod site and ROM Manager, but for now Koush is suggesting everyone skip the ROM Manager route and flash by hand.
Because I can't seem to listen to instruction or reason, I had to try the ROM Manager method, and sure enough it doesn't work. If you are as thick-headed as I am and try, you just need to flash the stock recovery back into place and boot into it once to fix your non-booting Nexus 4. Flashing or booting from fastboot works a treat though.
Now we have root and recovery for the N4, let's see how bad we can break stuff!

My Little Pony for Android

My Little Pony for Android: Basically 'My First RPG'

My Little Pony

I'm the only one here at Android Central who has young daughters, so it came as a bit of a shock that I had to fight off the other guys for first dibs at the My Little Pony game for Android. (Take that, Hildenbrand!)

HTC Droid DNA

Another Droid DNA pic leaks

Droid DNA
The fellows at @evleaks have shown off yet another leaked image render of the HTC Droid DNA, the 5-inch beast from HTC we're pretty sure is headed to Verizon. We certainly don't know all the details of this one, but the rumors of a quad-core Snapdragon Pro, 2GB of RAM, and a 5-inch 1080p has got plenty of folks on Verizon interested.
While I still think the J Butterfly is a better name, I can see a lot of people being pretty happy should this one go up for sale around Thanksgiving, like the leaked Verizon MAP document we first showed you suggests.

Jelly Bean update for Galaxy S3

Samsung once again pushing out Jelly Bean update for Galaxy S3

Android Central
Samsung has once again started rolling out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S3. The update first landed in Poland a few weeks back, before being sent out to Korean S3 owners last week. However, the new firmware version has yet to see a widespread roll-out.
Today it seems the company’s ready to move ahead with Jelly Bean on the international Galaxy S3, as a new Jelly Bean-based firmware, version XXDLIH, has started pushing out to S3 owners in Sweden.
As we reported a couple of months back, the Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean update includes many new features, aside from the standard Android 4.1 features like Google Now and “Project Butter.” Anyone pulling down the new Jelly Bean-based ROM will also get new TouchWiz features, including Blocking Mode for managing notifications, an alternate home screen setup called Easy Mode, and certain Galaxy Note 2features, such as Smart Rotation.
If you’ve got Jelly Bean up and running on your Galaxy S3, hit the comments and let us know how you’re getting on.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 2

Samsung's Galaxy Note 2 makes its first stateside public appearance

Galaxy Note 2.
Another sign that the US release of the Galaxy Note 2 is now on the radar: the phablet itself, in the flesh for the first time on American soil here tonight in New York. We stopped by Pepcom where Sprint was onhand with its holiday lineup, including its just-announced iteration of the Note 2, which the carrier says will be on shelves no later than "this Fall." It's nothing you haven't seen in our in-depth hands-on of the international version; in fact, Sprint's demo model was identical, lacking any carrier branding whatsover. Regardless, we'll take it as the obligatory first sign that the Galaxy Note 2 is nearly ready to make its American debut. Hit the break for some hands on shots.

Kindle Fire HD 7

Kindle Fire HD 7 unboxing and initial impressions

Kindle Fire HD 7
UPS just dropped off our Amazon Kindle Fire HD, and we wanted to share a look at the first new Kindle to be released. It's a 7-inch tablet that sort of runs Android -- Amazon has forked off the stock Ice Cream Sandwich build and made it their own, never once mentioning the word Android on the device or packaging. The Fire HD 7 (my new name for it) comes with 16 or 32GB of storage (we grabbed the 16) and features a TI OMAP 4460 under a 7-inch 1280x800 screen.
Of course we're going to review the unit at length, but first impressions come back positive. The Fire HD 7 is well built, and feels like it was constructed out of quality materials. It's light enough to use with one hand, and balanced well -- it should serve purposes just fine for reading or lounging and watching a video or two.
All your Amazon content is instantly available from the moment you register the device with your Amazon account, which was painless. The screen itself seems to be of good quality, is nice and bright, and easy to see. We'll have to put it to further testing, but I'm not afraid to call it "good" at first glance. The tablet's performance seems fine as well, but of course we need to see how it handles some gaming or streaming long video.
We'll have more about the Kindle Fire HD 7 coming, including the inevitable comparison to the Nexus 7over the next few days, and stay tuned for the full review. For now, hit the break for an unboxing and quick 10 minute look .

Google Play kicks off end of summer sale

Android Central
Gameloft isn't the only one putting their Android wares on discount for the long weekend; Google Play has an official end of summer sale that has quietly started, with many apps already discounted. Check out this search to see what's currently discounted, and expect that list to grow as the weekend wears on. We've received a few tips about the impending sale, but we're still waiting for a big promotional banner on the front page of Google Play, or some equally obvious place to find all of the discounted apps in one spot. (Update: Ahh, here we go.)
Have you found any particularly great apps with recent discounts?

T-Mobile Galaxy Tab 7 plus

Ice Cream Sandwich coming to T-Mobile Galaxy Tab 7 plus, but only via Kies

Galaxy Tab 7 plus
T-Mobile support has let everyone know that an optional Android 4.0.5 update for the Galaxy Tab 7-plusshould be ready and waiting in Samsung Kies tomorrow. Before we go any further, we know it says 4.0.5 -- that could be a typo or it could be a specially-built version from Samsung for the Tab 7-plus. I've reached out, and will let everyone know when I hear back.
What we do know is that it's Ice Cream Sandwich, which T-Mobile and Samsung feel is a drastic enough change in the user experience to make it an optional install versus pushing it out to everyone. We hate Kies as much as you all do, but we like choice so we won't ding them too much this time.
Anyhoo, you'll be updating to Android version 4.0.5 / Software version T869UVLG7, which will be required to access Music Hub after August 27, 2012. You'll need to have the latest version of Kies, and at least a 50-percent charge, See the full details at the source link.

new iphone software

iPhone software downloads are sure to be in great demand in the coming months.
